My first visit to Dubrovnik

Ever since I can remember, I’ve heard about this Adriatic city called Dubrovnik. My father would especially talk about the city, as he’d been there several times during his youth – working during the summer period and spending countless of weekends at the many beaches around Dubrovnik. However, I, for some reason, never had the chance to visit Dubrovnik until last year – about time!!
I must say that the city swept away my feet. Firstly, the beaches in the area are absolutely amazing and secondly, the old city behind the walls is incredibly beautiful. I was surprised by the fact that the old city of Dubrovnik was surrounded by this big wall – I didn’t imagine it that way at all and this was what really made me fall in love with the city. The old city is really charming and is worth visiting both by day and also by night. It is no wonder why Dubrovnik is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Dubrovnik from above
If you’re staying in Dubrovnik for a couple of days do not miss out the beautiful view from Srđ mountain. The view from here is absolutely breathtaking! On a clear day it is possible to see up to 60 km – this means that you’ll also be able to see some of the islands around the city. I was very lucky when I visited Srđ – it was a clear hot day and I was simply amazed by the beautiful view from here.
It is possible to get there either by car, cable car or by hiking. If you’re going by car it will take you 5-10 minutes from the old city. You can also take the cable car from the cable car station not far from the city walls. The cable cars rise about 450 meters above sea level in just 3 minutes. However, if you choose to hike, make sure to bring a lot of water and sunblock with you as the path is exposed to sun – and the weather in Dubrovnik tends to be very hot especially from May until mid September.
The beaches
Another reason to visit Dubrovnik would be because of its many beautiful beaches. I visited 4-5 beaches when I visited the city last year and my favorite was the Veliki žal beach – located some 30 km from the city center. The beach is very small but is not crowded what I enjoyed the most. Moreover, the beach here is very clean and clear and you can simply enjoy the beautiful surroundings.
However, some of the more famous beaches to visit are:
Babin Kuk, Srebreno, Kupari, Caftat and Copacabana (yes, they have it in Croatia as well :P)
Just remember, it is actually better to visit some of the less famous beaches as they would usually not be as crowded.
When to visit Dubrovnik?

If you’re going to Dubrovnik in order to explore the beautiful historical city it is recommended to visit during April – May or September – October as the temperature during these months is quite nice and not too hot. If you’re going on a sunbathing holiday the best months to visit the city is from June – August as the temperature tends to be very hot (you will get a great tan)! However, you can visit Dubrovnik anytime during the year.
